What this assumes
- The yearly deposit is made in April, for the years you choose, and interest keeps being added until the account matures 21 years after opening.
- Interest each month is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and added on 31 March.
- Partial withdrawals for education or marriage, and tax, are not taken into account.

How it works
A Sukanya Samriddhi account is opened for a girl child by a parent or legal guardian. Deposits are allowed for 15 years from opening, and the account matures 21 years from opening. The yearly deposit is between ₹250 and ₹1,50,000.
- Interest is set by the government every quarter, worked out monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the month end, and added to the account once a year.
- After the deposit years no more money goes in, but the balance keeps earning interest until the account matures.
- Withdrawal: up to 50% of the previous year-end balance, for education or marriage, once the girl is 18.
Balance after a year = (balance at the start + deposit) + interest of the 12 months
A worked example
₹1,50,000 paid in every April for 15 years, with interest at the rates in force and the latest rate assumed to continue, reaches ₹71,82,119 (₹71.82 lakh) when the account matures after 21 years. You pay in ₹22,50,000; the interest is ₹49,32,119. At a steady 8.2%, the first year earns 1,50,000 x 0.082 = ₹12,300.
What it leaves out
- Partial withdrawals and early closure.
- Missed deposits, which carry a penalty to revive the account.
- Future rate changes. The latest rate is assumed to continue, which may not happen.
- The exact opening date. Deposits are taken in April and years are counted in whole financial years.
- Tax.
Questions people ask
Is the Sukanya Samriddhi rate fixed?
No. The government announces the rate for each quarter. When we last checked, on 1 Nov 2026, it was 8.2% a year. The new rate applies to the whole balance, so this calculator uses the rate notified for each period and assumes the latest rate continues after that.
Why do deposits stop after 15 years if the account runs for 21?
The scheme takes deposits for 15 years from opening. After that the balance stays in the account and keeps earning interest until it matures 21 years from opening.
How much can be deposited in a year?
Between ₹250 and ₹1,50,000 in a financial year. A missed minimum makes the account irregular until it is revived with a small penalty and the missed minimums.
Can money be taken out early?
A part of the balance, up to 50% of the previous year-end balance, can be withdrawn for education or marriage once the girl turns 18. Closing the account before maturity is allowed only in limited cases. This calculator does not model withdrawals.
Why might another calculator show a different amount?
Calculators differ in the rate they use, how they treat the month of deposit, and whether they count interest on the lowest balance each month. This one works through every month and each quarter’s notified rate, with deposits in April.
