How it works
A systematic transfer plan moves a fixed amount from one fund (the source) into another (the target) every month. What is left in the source keeps growing at the source return, and what has moved grows at the target return.
Each month: move min(transfer, source balance), then source x (1 + i source), target x (1 + i target)
The page then compares the plan with two other paths over the same period: moving everything to the target on day one, and never moving anything.
A worked example
Start with ₹12,00,000 in the source fund at 7 a year, move ₹50,000 a month into a target fund at 12 a year, and look at 5 years. The source empties in month 26. At the end the plan holds ₹20,74,940. Moving it all on day one would have given ₹21,80,036, and leaving it in the source ₹17,01,150. These are results of the rates you entered. In real markets the order could be reversed.
What it leaves out
- Tax on the gains each time units leave the source fund.
- Exit load on the source fund.
- Fund charges.
- Any change in either return over time.
Questions people ask
What is an STP for?
It lets you move a sum into a different kind of fund in steps rather than at once. People use it to spread the entry over several months. This page shows the arithmetic of that choice, not whether it is a good one.
Why can the plan end lower than moving everything on day one?
If you assume the target fund earns more than the source, money moved earlier has more time at the higher rate. If you assume the opposite, the order flips. The result depends entirely on the two returns you enter.
What returns should I put in?
Nobody can promise them. Try a few pairs, and also try a case where the target earns less than the source, to see how much the answer depends on your guess.
What if the transfer is larger than what is left?
The last transfer moves only what remains, and the source ends at zero. The page tells you in which month that happens.
Is tax included?
No. Moving units out of a fund is usually a redemption, which can be taxed, and this calculator does not model that.
